Amid the border tension between India and Pakistan, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Thursday, May 7, through a social media post. Soon after Rohit’s retirement, news about Virat Kohli also came out.
According to a report by The Indian Express, a few days after Rohit’s decision, Virat Kohli informed the BCCI that he also wanted to retire from Test cricket. However, a top BCCI official has requested that he reconsider his decision.
Will Virat Kohli Say Goodbye to Test Cricket?
The Indian team is facing increasing challenges ahead of the England tour. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket, a new report suggests that Virat Kohli may also retire from the format. Rohit announced his Test retirement on May 7 through a social media post.
Rohit to Continue Playing ODIS
Rohit Sharma will continue to play in ODI cricket. Like Kohli, he had already retired from T20IS after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. So, fans will now see Rohit and Kohli play together only in ODIS. But after Rohit’s exit from Tests, Kohli might also take a surprise decision soon.

Virat Kohli did not perform well in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25. He scored only 190 runs in 9 innings across 5 matches, with an average of 23. His highest contribution was 100 runs in the Perth Test. India lost the series 1–3 against Australia.
Kohli’s Test Journey Since 2011
Virat Kohli made his Test debut in June 2011 against the West Indies in Kingston. He scored 4 runs in the first innings and 15 in the second. His last Test was against Australia in Sydney in January 2025, where he scored 17 and 6 runs in the two innings.
IND vs ENG Test Series: Will Kohli Be Left Out?
The Indian selectors are expected to announce the squad soon for the five-match Test series in England, starting January 20. Reports suggest that Kohli may not be part of the squad and could announce his Test retirement before the series.
