Honda Activa has been an epitome of reliable, fuel-efficient, and comfortable two-wheeler commuting for decades. It is a household name in India. Now, this iconic scooter is about to electrify Indian roads with an electric version.
A Glimpse into the Future
Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) announced that it plans to launch its first electric scooter in early 2025, a time when the company is witnessing a rising trend all over the world toward ecologically friendly mobility solutions. Though the details are confidential, insiders reveal that the much-awaited electric scooter cannot be but the Activa.
Preparation for its Production and Launch
Honda has made huge strides in increasing its production volume to match the increasing demand for electric vehicles. The company has established one-product lines in its plants at Gujarat and Karnataka. Karnataka will be particularly geared up for the production of electric scooters. And the company is expecting a production launch in December of 2024, where the first electric scooter might be released early next year.
Activa Electric: A Risk-Averse Launch
Honda will not be a radical player in electric two-wheelers with its Activa Electric. The electric two-wheeler is more likely to be an upgraded version of the existing petrol two-wheeler. Which means, in terms of design and ergonomics, it will pretty much remain like the original product but shall define itself through an electric powertrain.
However, this will also limit the competitiveness of electric Activa in an increasingly rapidly evolving EV market. Established players like Ola Electric and Ather Energy are offering cutting-edge technology with advanced features; Honda will have to differentiate its electric scooter from these players when selling it to the buyer.
The exact details of the Activa Electric are yet to be confirmed, but the fixed battery pack and an estimated top speed of 50 km/h will surely be provided. This makes it just suitable for daily commutes but less impressive for a performance rider or someone requiring long-distance traveling.
