In a bid to streamline the food distribution system, the Himachal Pradesh Food Supply Department has taken an adamant stance regarding eKYC compliance. The outcome of this decision is the blocking of 46,000 ration cards in Kangra district, leaving thousands of families deprived of subsidized food grains. The move is one that reflects the determination of the department to modernize the public distribution system and maintain correct beneficiary data.

What is eKYC and Why is it Important

eKYC, or electronic Know Your Customer, is the process of verification of an individual’s identity in a digital format. In the case of the Public Distribution System, eKYC helps to eliminate fraudulent entries and ensures that food subsidies reach the right people. This prevents misuse of government resources while ensuring that genuine beneficiaries receive their entitlements without any hindrance.

Impact on Kangra District

This decision has struck the Kangra district the worst as it covers the biggest number of 1,135 ration depots, in this particular area. In many districts of this region, as much as 46,000 ration card holders do not seem to agree. It is for the reason that there is no compliance. These things cause many difficulties among numerous families of many families coming under economically weaker groups of people in society.

State’s Stance

The Food Supply Department has stressed that this move is applicable to all types of ration cards, irrespective of the status of the beneficiaries’ socio-economic status. They have reiterated that eKYC is a must for all in order to get the ration benefits. Though there is some resistance to this decision, the department is firm in its stand and underlines the necessity of eKYC for the integrity and efficiency of PDS.

Simplified eKYC Process

Considering the difficulties that some beneficiaries are facing, the department has streamlined the eKYC process. People can now get their eKYC done from home using the “Mobile PDS HP App.” This application is user-friendly, and there is no need for fingerprint or OTP authentication. All that is required is a simple face scan for verification. This should help increase accessibility and enhance eKYC compliance rates.

Way Forward

The blocking of ration cards is a strong message regarding the importance of eKYC compliance. Though it has caused immediate disruption for some, it is crucial for the long-term sustainability and effectiveness of the PDS. Modernizing the system and ensuring accurate beneficiary data will help the government ensure that food subsidies reach those who truly need them, thereby enhancing the efficiency and transparency of the public distribution system in Himachal Pradesh.
