As 2024 nears its final act, the curtains for the film season this year will also drop. But this year numerous films were released in cinema and OTT platforms. Some of them were big budget and some of the films released with good stories. Many OTT releases became the talk of the town. Like every year Netflix lived up to the expectations this year. So we take a look at the top 5 Netflix films whose stories were better than several big-budget releases.
Amar Singh Chamkila
The top film of the year is the Bollywood biopic Amar Singh Chamkila, which became the best Hindi OTT release and is among the top 5 overall. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film shines due to Diljit Dosanjh’s stellar portrayal of Chamkila, supported by Parineeti Chopra and Anjum Batra. With Imtiaz’s direction, AR Rahman’s music, and breathtaking cinematography, the film brings back the legacy of Chamkila, dominating the Filmfare OTT Awards.
Sector 36
Sector 36 on Netflix, starring Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal, takes viewers into a chilling world inspired by the real-life Noida serial murders, or Nithari killings. This crime thriller blends authenticity with suspense, unraveling a brutal and haunting narrative set in a seemingly peaceful affluent neighborhood. With its raw portrayal of terror, Sector 36 is not for the faint-hearted or overthinkers, delivering a story that demands to be told in its unflinching reality.
Bhakshak
This is inspired by the real-life Muzaffarpur Shelter Home Case, where 35 girls were rescued from sexual harassment and assault. Starring Bhumi Pednekar as a struggling TV journalist, the film is hard-hitting and thought-provoking, portraying its female lead as strong and unwavering in her pursuit of justice. Released at the start of 2024, Bhakshak sets the tone for more powerful, real-life-inspired stories in Hindi cinema. Bhakshak was produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s production company and released on Netflix.
Maharaj
Maharaj, marking the debut of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan, delves into the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862, exposing the misconduct of religious leader Yadunathji Brij Ratan Ji Maharaj. Starring Jaideep Ahlawat, the film highlights the efforts of real-life journalist Karsandas Mulji and reflects on societal issues of the time. While it may not fully satisfy fans of courtroom drama, Maharaj offers a compelling and relevant story. With a strong narrative, it stands out as one of the better films of 2024, surpassing some theatrical releases.
Do Patti
The film explores themes like childhood trauma, domestic violence, gender disparity, and oppression in Indian families. While it has some faults, the stellar performances from Kriti and Shaheer make up for it, although Kajol’s inconsistent Haryanvi accent detracts from her performance. Despite these flaws, Do Patti stands out as a solid one-time watch and could easily be preferred over several major releases of the year.
