8th Pay Commission: A major update is making waves among over one crore central government employees and pensioners in India. The long-awaited 8th Pay Commission is expected to bring a massive boost in salaries, increasing the current minimum basic pay from ₹18,000 to as much as ₹71,703. Although the commission was officially announced in January this year, the government is yet to form a panel.

DA Merger into Basic Salary Under Discussion

One of the biggest talking points at the moment is the possible merger of the Dearness Allowance (DA) into the basic salary. Recently, the central government increased DA by 2%, raising it to 55%. This move has sparked speculations that the DA may be merged with basic pay before the new pay matrix is implemented.

In the past, such mergers were carried out prior to applying the new fitment factor. A similar approach is now being considered for the 8th Pay Commission. If approved, this could significantly impact how salaries are structured and calculated for government employees.

Current Salary Scenario and DA Impact

At present, under the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum basic salary for Level-1 employees is ₹18,000. When the recently increased 55% DA is added to it, the total rises to ₹27,900. If the government decides to apply the fitment factor on this new amount instead of the previous ₹18,000, employees could witness a significant jump in their take-home salary.

The previous Pay Commission followed this method, and a similar format is being considered again. This adjustment could result in one of the biggest pay hikes seen in years for central government staff.

What to Expect from the 8th Pay Commission

According to media sources, the 8th Pay Commission is expected to recommend a fitment factor ranging from 1.92 to 2.86. The current fitment factor is 2.57. If the same factor is applied to the revised basic salary of ₹27,900, then the salary could reach ₹71,703.

Should the highest suggested fitment factor of 2.86 be adopted, the salary could further increase to around ₹79,794. While these figures are not final, they offer a glimpse into the scale of the potential salary revision under the new pay structure.
