The Border-Gavaskar Trophy roars on at the Gabba, and Australia firmly stamped their authority on the third Test. Rain washed away the first day, while the second day saw something of a run-fest unfold, leaving India with its back against the wall to climb. Here’s action so far:
A Dominant Display by Australia Batting Mainstays
After the rain-affected first day, which saw a total of only 28 runs, the Australian batsmen went on to take over center stage on Day 2. The experienced batting of Steve Smith and Travis Head would weave magic, frustrate the Indian bowlers with their resolute batting.
Head, fresh off a hundred in Adelaide, continued his stellar form, scoring a magnificent 151 runs. His knock was a masterclass in controlled aggression, peppered with exquisite boundaries. Smith, known for his unorthodox technique and grit, provided the perfect foil, anchoring the innings with a well-compiled 101. Rest of the batting for Australia did not put forward their capabilities by staying in the crease except for the wicket-keeper Alex Carey (45* not out), with Usman Khawaja contributing just 21 runs, Pat Cummins only 20, Marnus Labuschagne making only 12, Nathan McSweeney just 9 runs and Mitchell Marsh contributing mere 5 runs.
Bumrah Excellent Showings During Indians’ Failure
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s pace spearhead, was once again the visitors’ standout performer. He picked up a well-deserved five-wicket haul (5/77) and showed his lethal bowling with the second new ball. His wickets included crucial scalps of Head, Smith, and Mitchell Marsh, which kept India in the contest. Nitish Reddy and Mohammed Siraj chipped in with a wicket each, but overall, the Indian bowling attack struggled to contain the rampant Australian batsmen.
Rohit Sharma’s Bold Selection Gamble
Indian captain Rohit Sharma made some bold decisions about the playing XI. Bowing first after winning the toss, he dropped both seasoned spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and youngster pacer Harshit Rana. Instead, the all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and rookie pacer Akash Deep were given a start. This gamble did not quite pay off as there was no pressure that the bowlers, particularly the Indian spinners, could maintain on the Australian batsman.
There will be three remaining days of the Test with the Indian batsmen staring at the task of forcing a miraculous comeback. So, there should be a productive opening stand between KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, backed by major contributions from Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant to stage a potential comeback. Will India defy the odds and level the series? Or will Australia continue their dominance and take a crucial 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy? Stay tuned for the remaining days of enthralling cricketing action from the Gabba.
