The rest of the IPL 2025 season will start from Saturday. The tournament was temporarily suspended earlier. Now, 17 matches are left including the remaining league games, playoffs, and the final.

Some rules have been changed for this phase of the IPL. According to the original schedule, the IPL final was supposed to be held on May 25. But due to an emergency, the tournament was postponed. As per the new schedule, the final will now be played on June 3.

Because of the date change, all franchises are facing problems with their foreign players. The World Test Championship final will begin on June 11. Also, England and the West Indies have their bilateral series. So, many foreign players won’t be available for the entire IPL. Some will only play league matches but will miss the playoffs. Others are unwilling to return after going home.

To handle this situation, the IPL governing body has introduced temporary rule changes.

Temporary Replacements Allowed for Rest of IPL

Delhi Capitals’ Jack Fraser McGurk and Chennai Super Kings’ Jamie Overton will be available for the rest of the IPL. Many other players are also on this list. According to the new temporary replacement rule in IPL, teams can replace these players for the remainder of the tournament.

Important Condition for Replacement Players

But there is a condition in this rule. Players signed as replacements cannot be kept by the teams for the next IPL season. They can only play in this IPL.

When Can Replacement Players Be Signed?

Usually, replacement players are signed only in cases of injury, serious illness, or unavoidable reasons. But this time, because of the unusual situation, new rules have been made.

Delhi Capitals’ New Signing

Delhi Capitals’ opener Jack Fraser McGurk has withdrawn from the rest of the IPL. To replace him, Delhi signed Bangladesh’s left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman for ₹6 crores.

You may wonder why a left-arm pacer was signed instead of a specialist opener. If Delhi reaches the playoffs, they will not get Australian star Mitchell Starc because he will be playing in the World Test Championship. So, Mustafizur is considered as a backup for Starc.

Special Rule for Earlier Replacement Players

The board clarified one thing. Players signed as replacements even 48 hours before the IPL was postponed — such as Siddiqulla Atal (Delhi Capitals), Mayank Agarwal (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Luan-Dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger (Rajasthan Royals) — can be retained for the next IPL. But this rule will not apply to Mustafizur Rahman.
