Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer created history in the match against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday. He became the first captain in IPL history to take three different teams to the playoffs. Punjab Kings qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs after defeating Rajasthan Royals by 10 runs. The win came with the help of half-centuries from Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh, along with 3 wickets from Harpreet Brar.
PBKS Qualified for IPL 2025 Playoffs
On the back of brilliant half-centuries by Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh, Punjab Kings (PBKS) scored 219 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. Nehal made 70 runs, while Shashank remained unbeaten with 59 runs.
In response, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) could only manage 209 runs for 7 wickets in their 20 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel scored fifties for Rajasthan, but they couldn’t win the match for their team.
For Punjab, Harpreet Brar took 3 wickets, while Marco Jansen and Azmatullah Omarzai took 2 wickets each. With this win, Punjab reached 3rd place on the points table with 17 points and secured a spot in the playoffs.
Shreyas Iyer Created a Unique IPL Record
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer created a special record in IPL 2025. He became the first captain in IPL history to take three different teams to the playoffs.
He earlier led Delhi Capitals in 2019 and 2020, then captained Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2024, and now led Punjab Kings in 2025 to the playoffs.
Only Fifth Player to Captain Three Franchises
Shreyas Iyer is now the fifth player to captain three different IPL teams. The other players are:
- Steve Smith – Rajasthan Royals, Pune Warriors India, Rising Pune Supergiants
- Kumar Sangakkara – Punjab Kings, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad
- Mahela Jayawardene – Punjab Kings, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Delhi Capitals
- Ajinkya Rahane – Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiants, KKR
