Pakistani artists are now banned in India, and their work has been suspended. None of their films or series will be shown in India. This move comes after the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgaon, which brought back memories of 2016, when India took similar steps after the Uri attack. At that time, Pakistani artists were boycotted.
One of the victims of this ban was Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. She fell into depression after the boycott. Mahira had worked alongside Shah Rukh Khan in the Bollywood film Raees, which was her first project in India.
Mahira Khan Opens Up About Her Mental Health Struggles
A few days ago, in an interview, actress Mahira Khan shared her long struggle with mental health. Speaking on the Fi podcast, she revealed that she suffered from conditions like manic depression and had to fight hard to overcome them.
The Struggle Started Before ‘Raees’ Release
Mahira said that her troubles began even before the release of Raees. After the Uri attack in 2016, relations between India and Pakistan worsened, and Pakistani artists were banned from Bollywood. This directly affected her career.
She said, “I had finished shooting the film, everything was going well. But after the Uri attack, things suddenly went wrong. I even started receiving threatening calls from India.”
“I Wanted the Film to Release in Pakistan”
Mahira also shared, “I just wanted the film to release in Pakistan at least, because Shah Rukh Khan is very popular here.”
Six Years on Antidepressants
She revealed that she has been taking antidepressants for the past six to seven years. When she tried to stop the medicines for a few days, her condition worsened. “I went to such a dark place, it’s hard to put into words,” she said. “Mental illness is just like a physical illness. Many people go through tough times. But clinical depression is a different kind of challenge altogether.”
