The Boxing Day Test in Melbourne holds a lot of promise to be the turning point for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Currently tied at 1-1, the two teams will look forward to clinching the next match and taking the advantage. But a dark cloud continues to loom over the Indian batting unit, specifically over the poor form of their skipper, Rohit Sharma.
The Batting Woes of Rohit: A Reason to Panic
Rohit, known for his explosive batting at the top of the order, has uncharacteristically struggled with the bat in the first two Tests. Since returning from the birth of his child, he has managed scores of just 3, 6, and 10 runs. This dip in form has prompted discussions amongst fans and analysts alike, with many questioning his current batting position at number six. Though Rohit has accepted how he was struggling, but he still feels he will come out and perform.
Aakash Chopra Tip A Bold Gamble
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra feels shuffling the batting order can be one of the potential solutions. He feels that Rohit should bat at number three, a position he has batted at with so much success in the past. It would enable him to face the new ball early and hopefully get back into his rhythm. But then, such a change would also mean that the middle order would have to be reshuffled, and that would affect the form of young batsman Shubman Gill.
Shubman Gill’s patchy form: Time to panic
Gill, who has been touted as a future star of Indian cricket, hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in recent outings. While he has shown glimpses of brilliance, he hasn’t converted them into substantial scores consistently. Chopra highlights Gill’s struggle to score big runs outside Asia, a concerning trend for a player expected to be a mainstay in the Indian batting lineup.
Decision Time for Team Management
The Indian team management now have a very important decision to make. Do they persist with the same batting order and wait for Rohit to rediscover his touch? Or do they take a gamble by sending him to bat at number three and perhaps disrupting the middle order’s rhythm? There is also the issue of Sarfaraz Khan, the young batsman who missed out on Perth. Should he be looked at as a possible alternative if Gill doesn’t recover?
The Melbourne Test: A Platform for Redemption?
The Melbourne Cricket Ground has always been considered a playground for batsmen. There is every possibility that these two players, Rohit and Gill, will look to salvage their confidence with a significant performance. The Indian skipper’s strong performance will help the team gain the much-needed momentum in the series. However, if Rohit continues struggling, the team management could be left with no option but to think about bolder solutions.
Boxing Day Test promises to be both a test of character for the Indian batting line-up along with Rohit Sharma individually. Will he regain momentum and take his team in the match or will India do something tough, especially if that is the batting order when there is still all to play for in the series? That only time will tell.
