Monsoon Alert: The shifting weather trend in India is ushering in mixed conditions for the week ahead. While some areas will see relief from the searing heat, others will witness intense monsoon activity. Heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings have been sounded by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in various states that are expected to persist in the next 48 hours and more.
Relief and Caution in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh
Rainfall has provided respite from severe heat in Delhi and other areas of Uttar Pradesh. Regions that were sizzling under intense heat have noticed a change in their weather conditions following rain and gusty winds. Western Uttar Pradesh, especially, is witnessing wind activity that has cooled the atmosphere. Eastern Uttar Pradesh has witnessed an apparent increase in temperature. The weather can turn around again on Saturday with rain and strong winds. Accounts of trees being uprooted in a number of places reflect the intensity of the storm.
Heavy Rains to Lash the Northeast
The IMD says that the northeastern states are expected to see heavy weather activity in the coming week. Red alert has been sounded over many places, where heavy rain with thunderstorms and winds of 30 to 50 km/h is predicted. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya are likely to be the worst affected. These places can expect likely damage from storm conditions until May 21. Tripura and Mizoram are also expected to get incessant rainfall and gusty winds, leading to local conditions being difficult.
South India to Experience Sharp Weather Change
The climate of South India is also going to experience a quick change. Thunderstorms and overcast skies will become more common, with probable rain becoming disruptive. The new conditions will be able to affect daily routines and public transportation in southern regions of the nation, although specific states were not mentioned.
Heavy Rain Throughout Northern and Central Provinces
Other areas such as Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad can expect significant rainfall by May 21. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also alert for thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 50 km/h. States in central and eastern India including Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim, are likely to witness heavy rainfall. Eastern Rajasthan, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi are likely to experience light to moderate showers. Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh are also predicted to experience rains from May 19 to May 21.
