In a significant move that will benefit thousands of aspiring Chartered Accountants across India, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced that the CA Final examinations will now be conducted three times a year instead of twice. This landmark decision was taken during the 441st Council Meeting held on March 27, 2025, in New Delhi.
For years, students preparing for the CA Final exams had only two opportunities each year one in May and another in November. However, starting in 2025, they will have an additional chance to appear for the exams, with new exam cycles set for January, May, and September. This change aligns with international best practices and provides candidates with greater flexibility in planning their exam attempts.
A Step Towards Better Opportunities
Last year, ICAI had already made a similar adjustment for the Intermediate and Foundation level exams, increasing their frequency to three times a year. With this latest update, all three levels of the Chartered Accountancy course now follow the same timeline.
The ICAI, in its official statement, emphasized that this decision is aimed at providing students with additional opportunities to complete their qualifications smoothly and efficiently. By reducing the waiting time between attempts, ICAI hopes to ease the pressure on students and allow them to progress in their careers at a faster pace.
More Flexibility, Less Stress
Every CA aspirant knows the immense pressure of preparing for the Final exams. The previous system, which allowed only two attempts per year, often led to long waiting periods for students who couldn’t clear the exam in one go. Now, with exams being held every four months, candidates will no longer have to wait six months for their next attempt. This will not only reduce stress but also help them stay motivated and focused.
Additionally, this move will be particularly beneficial for students who are balancing their articleship, studies, and personal commitments. More exam cycles mean they can choose a schedule that works best for them without delaying their career progress.
Changes in Post Qualification Course in Information Systems Audit
Apart from the CA Final exams update, ICAI has also revised the schedule for the Post Qualification Course in Information Systems Audit. Earlier, the Assessment Test for this course was conducted twice a year, in June and December. However, starting next year, it will also be held three times a year in February, June, and October.
This modification further reflects ICAI’s commitment to improving professional education and making it more accessible for students.
What’s Next?
ICAI President CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda and Vice President CA. Prasanna Kumar D, along with other council members, discussed these changes as part of their ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of professional education in India. The council is expected to release further details and guidelines soon regarding the new exam structure.
For now, students can take this as a positive step towards making their CA journey more manageable. With more attempts and better flexibility, this decision marks a turning point in how CA exams are conducted in India.
