Monsoon Alert: IMD Sounds Alarm for Heavy Rains and Storms in 15 States

Monsoon Alert Harsh sunlight and scorching heat have created miserable living conditions in Delhi. Individuals are staying indoors during the day, as hot winds continue to sweep across the city on May 20. The various states in the country are meanwhile preparing for thunderstorms and heavy rains as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) releases fresh warnings.

Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Heat vs. Rain Threat

While Delhi grapples with scorching sun and high temperatures, sections of Uttar Pradesh are set to experience a change in weather. On Tuesday, May 21, eastern and western areas of UP can expect thunderstorms. The IMD has predicted winds touching 40 to 50 km/h in several districts on Tuesday and Wednesday. The shift in weather serves as a welcome relief from sweltering heat but could also introduce disruption.

Hills Soaked: Heavy Rain Lashes North India’s Mountains

Non-stop rainstorms, hail, thunder, and lightning are lashing Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. These states are already witnessing chaos because of unexpected heavy rainfall. The situation in the hill regions is also unsteady as regular rain episodes have created a tough life daily. Extensive rainfall is also observed over the northern plains, aggravating conditions in several areas.

Southern States Under Flood-Like Situation

Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu are experiencing heavy rain and waterlogging. In Bangalore, some roads have been covered by water, and even houses in various areas have been inundated with water. From May 20 to 23, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra can expect more rainfall. The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert state-wise and an Orange Alert for some parts in Konkan, Marathwada, North Maharashtra, and Western Maharashtra. This prolonged spell of rain can cause extensive disruption of transport and normal activities.

Cyclonic Weather to Hit 15 States

A strong cyclonic system is likely to disturb a large number of states between May 20 and May 23. IMD predicts heavy rain in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Kerala, Mahe, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kadaikanal, Konkan, and Goa. A Yellow Alert is issued in Karnataka with thunderstorm and rain forecasts till May 22. Day temperatures will range between 20°C to 33°C during these days. The department has asked people in the affected regions to stay vigilant and not undertake any unnecessary journeys.
