A fresh change is coming to your wallet soon! The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has officially announced that it will issue new ₹50 notes in the coming days. These notes will feature the signature of the new RBI Governor, Sanjay Malhotra, who took charge in December 2024, replacing Shaktikanta Das. With this move, the RBI is continuing its tradition of updating currency under new leadership, while maintaining familiar features for ease of recognition.
Same Design, New Identity
Although the new ₹50 note will carry the signature of the new governor, the overall design will remain the same as the current Mahatma Gandhi (New) series. The note will still carry the dimensions of 66 mm x 135 mm and retain its fluorescent blue colour. On the back, the iconic image of the stone chariot from Hampi, a symbol of India’s cultural and architectural pride, will remain unchanged. This blend of continuity and change offers both recognition and a refreshed identity.
Old ₹50 Notes Will Stay Valid
If you’re wondering whether your current ₹50 notes will become invalid, don’t worry. The RBI has confirmed that all previously issued ₹50 notes, including older ones, will continue to be legal tender. There’s no need to rush to the bank or exchange your notes. The new version will simply be added to the existing stock of circulating notes.
₹2000 Notes Almost Out of Circulation
While the ₹50 note is getting a new look, the RBI has also provided an update on the status of the ₹2000 note. Following the RBI’s withdrawal announcement in May 2023 under its Clean Note Policy, nearly 98.15% of ₹2000 notes have returned to the banking system by January 31, 2025. However, about ₹6,577 crore worth of ₹2000 notes are still held by the public.
