Hope arrives for a hefty boost in salaries for central government employees and pensioners with the onset of a new year. Long-awaited news comes from the front that the hike for Dearness Allowance, expected to surge steeply in its early forecast, is imminent. DA pays to the central government employees based on the living costs that the consumers face with their All India Consumer Price Index.

How Does DA Increase Decide

The AICPI data from July to December 2024 will be instrumental in deciding the DA increase for January 2025. The index had risen gradually and, by October 2024, it had touched 144.5 points. This upward trend suggests that the DA percentage, which is pegged at 53% currently, could be hiked to about 56%.

What Does This Mean for Employees

This would mean a 3% hike in the DA, which would be quite a significant increase in monthly salaries, helping to ease the burden of inflation. The 7th Pay Commission has proposed this biannual adjustment so that the purchasing power of employees is not significantly affected by inflationary trends.

Historical Trends and Future Projections

The AICPI had been steadily increasing in the last few months. Even a 1-point increase in November would bring the DA closer to 55.63%. If the index increases by 0.50 points in December, the DA would reach 56.29%. However, this is just a projection, and the final word will be with the official AICPI figures that are to be released in December.

Budget 2025 Expectations

Though the DA hike is a major event, central employees are eagerly awaiting the Union Budget 2025. The budget presentation on February 1st may bring more announcements and policy changes that could further benefit government employees.
