Monsoon High Alert: The sweltering summer heat in Delhi has finally abated. On May 17, 2025, people woke up to dust storms and rain across many areas of Delhi-NCR. This change, though abrupt, has given relief from the scorching weather. Noida and Greater Noida also experienced light showers, bringing down the temperatures.
Storm Hits NCR, Rain Brings Relief
Delhi witnessed a dramatic change in weather after days of unrelenting heat and scorching sunlight. Dust-filled winds swept across the city in the early hours of the morning, followed by spells of rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted additional rain and storminess later in the day. A yellow alert has been given, cautioning people to keep an eye out for changes in weather. These rains have resulted in a perceptible drop in temperature, providing relief to people from the severe heat.
Weather Forecast for Next Five Days
IMD has come out with a five-day weather forecast, foreseeing further instability in the region. The national capital and suburbs can expect further rain and thunderstorm activity in the following week. Winds and sporadic rainfall will continue to be the norm in NCR cities. Consequently, the climate is expected to remain cooler than the recent highs that Delhiites had been facing.
Air Quality Plummets After Dust Storm
The dust storm has deteriorated the air quality in Delhi. After eight days of comparatively improved air, the AQI has risen once again over 200 and into the poor category. This shift in wind and dust has impacted cities in the NCR as well, with no short-term relief in sight. Even after the cooling provided by the rain, air quality continues to be a problem.
Heavy Rain Warning in Northeastern States
While Delhi is coping with fluctuating weather, the IMD has also warned northeastern states. Rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit the region over the next five days. Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh have been put on alert for heavy rain. Likewise, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura, and Nagaland are also likely to see scattered thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall. Apart from this, some parts of Punjab are also expected to see rainfall activity in the next few days.
