Serial Killer Caught in Rajasthan: In a dramatic end to a long manhunt, Delhi Police have arrested a notorious criminal who lived under a false identity for months. Devender Sharma, a 67-year-old Ayurvedic doctor-turned-serial killer, was captured while posing as a priest in Rajasthan’s Dausa district. Sharma, known by the chilling nickname “Doctor Death,” had jumped parole in August 2023 and disappeared. His crimes go far beyond the ordinary, involving organ rackets, cold-blooded murders, and even feeding victims to crocodiles.

From Healer to Killer Devender Sharma Descent into Crime

Sharma started out as a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. After earning a BAMS degree, he opened a clinic in Rajasthan in 1984. Things took a dark turn in 1994 when he lost Rs 11 lakh in a failed gas dealership deal. This financial collapse pushed him into crime. A year later, he launched a fake gas agency and entered the illegal organ transplant business.

Between 1995 and 2004, Sharma facilitated over 125 illegal kidney transplants, charging up to Rs 7 lakh per case. Working with doctors and middlemen across multiple states, he ran one of the country’s largest organ trafficking networks. Parallel to this, he and his gang began intercepting LPG trucks, killing drivers, stealing goods, and dismantling vehicles for resale.

Gruesome Murders and a Chilling Modus Operandi

From 2002 to 2004, Sharma shifted focus to the murder of taxi and truck drivers. The gang would lure drivers with fake bookings, murder them, and dump their bodies in the crocodile-infested Hazara Canal in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district. This method helped erase all evidence of the killings. The stolen vehicles were then sold in grey markets.

Sharma’s criminal record includes at least 27 cases involving murder, robbery, and kidnapping. Police believe he is linked to more than 50 murders. In one Gurgaon case, he received the death penalty. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment in seven separate murder cases across Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana.

Living as a Priest and Final Arrest

Sharma was arrested in 2004 for his role in the kidney racket and serial killings. He had been serving his sentence at Tihar Jail until he was granted parole in August 2023. After disappearing again, Delhi Police’s Crime Branch began a six-month-long operation spanning Aligarh, Jaipur, Agra, Prayagraj, and Delhi.

He was finally located at an ashram in Dausa, Rajasthan, living as a spiritual man under a false name. This was not his first escape from parole. He previously vanished for seven months after being released in January 2020 and was only found in July that year. With his latest arrest, the curtain falls once more on the horrifying saga of a man who abused his medical knowledge to commit unspeakable crimes, leaving a trail of death across northern India.
